Capsule Endoscopy
Capsule endoscopy is a non-invasive procedure used to examine the small intestine for conditions that may not be detected by traditional endoscopic methods. Here’s an overview of what you can expect from a capsule endoscopy procedure:
Before the Procedure
Preparation for a capsule endoscopy involves:
- Preparation Instructions: You may need to follow a specific diet and fast for a period of time before the procedure to ensure a clear view of the small intestine.
- Medications and Allergies: Provide a list of all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, as well as any allergies to medications or substances.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your healthcare team about any existing medical conditions, especially heart, lung, or swallowing disorders, and if you have a pacemaker or other implanted devices.

During the Procedure
During a capsule endoscopy:
- Swallowing the Capsule: You will swallow a small, pill-sized capsule containing a camera. This capsule is equipped with a light source and transmitter.
- Wireless Transmission: As the capsule travels through your digestive tract, it takes thousands of images of the small intestine.
- Normal Activity: You can continue your normal activities while the capsule is in place. The images are transmitted to a data recorder worn on a belt around your waist.
After the Procedure
After capsule endoscopy:
- Capsule Passage: The capsule is naturally passed through your stool, usually within a few days. It is disposable and does not need to be retrieved.
- Follow-up: Your gastroenterologist will review the images captured by the capsule and discuss the findings with you. Further evaluation or treatment may be recommended based on the results.

Possible Complications
Capsule endoscopy is generally safe, but complications are rare. Potential risks include:
- Capsule Retention: In rare cases, the capsule may not pass naturally and may require removal endoscopically.
- Technical Issues: Wireless transmission may be interrupted, affecting the quality of images captured.
Your gastroenterologist will discuss any specific concerns and provide personalized guidance based on your individual health status and procedure findings.
